Our Doctrine

Below is an abbreviated version of our Statement of Faith

Our Theological Beliefs:
  • We believe in the inerrancy, sufficiency, inspiration, and authority of the 66 books of the Bible of both the Old and New Testament to be the very written word of God (2 Timothy 3:15-16; 2 Peter 1:20-21).
  • We believe that there is only one true and living God who eternally exists in three co-eternal, co-equal persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Deuteronomy 6:4; John 1:1-3; Acts 5:1-4; 2 Corinthians 13:14). God is infinite in being and perfection; invisible, immutable, eternal, and has in himself all life, glory, and goodness (Psalm 90:1-2; Acts 17:24-25; Romans 11:33-36). In the unity of the Godhead, the three persons are of one substance, power, and eternity.
  • We believe that Jesus Christ, eternally existing as the Son of the Father, took upon himself a human nature in order to live righteously, die a substitutionary death in the place of all who would trust him, and rose from the dead on the third day (Romans 1:1-6; 1 Corinthians 15:3-5; Philippians 2:5-11; 1 Timothy 3:16). He is coming again to judge all men (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17).
  • We believe that God the Holy Spirit causes men to be born again through his sovereign grace, overcoming men's hearts, creating faith and repentance, and enables men to freely repent and believe the gospel (Ezekiel 36:25-27; Titus 3:4-7). He indwells the believer until the day of redemption and imparts spiritual gifts to each (1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 1:12-14).
  • We believe that man is created in the image of God, but all have sinned and are guilty in Adam from conception (Genesis 1:27; Romans 3:19-23, 5:12-21). Man is created male and female, equal in dignity and worth, but distinct in their God-given roles in the world, family, marriage, and in the life of the local church (Genesis 2:18; Ephesians 5:22-33; 1 Timothy 2:8-14).
  • We believe that the church universal is made up of all those who trusted in the coming of Jesus Christ in all history, and that the local church is designed to showcase the glory of God in the saving of sinners (Ephesians 3:7-12; Revelation 7:9-10).

The Five Solas:
  • Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone): we believe that Scripture alone is the highest and only infalliable authority.
  • Sola Fide (faith alone): we believe that we are declared righteous and saved by faith alone in the gospel.
  • Sola gratia (grace alone): we believe that God saves sinners by his sovereign grace alone.
  • Solus Christus (Christ alone): we believe that Jesus Christ alone is the only Mediator between God and man.
  • Soli Deo Gloria (to the glory to God alone): we believe that all the glory goes to the Triune God alone.

OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH

Preface to the Statement
Statement of Faith
The Southwest Christian Church statement of faith has been written and crafted by our elders with careful attention to the clarity of Scripture, seeking to rightly divide the word of truth. We believe our statement of faith is both biblically faithful and in agreement with the historic, once-for-all faith delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3). The origination and emphasis of doctrinal phrasing can be seen in:

1). The wording of the statements has been adapted, utilized, and/or modernized from other faithful statements of faith such as:
  •  The Nicene Creed (381 AD)
  • The Athanasian Creed (5th-6th Century)
  • The Westminister Larger Catechism (1647)
  • The Second London Baptist Confession of Faith (1689)
  • The New Hampshire Confession of Faith (1833)
  • The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy (1978)
  • The Confessional Statement of the Gospel Coalition (2007; last revised, 2011)
  • The Doctrinal Statement of Grace Community Church (last modified, May 2024)

2). The intention of the word “alone,” which may appear subtle is to affirm the Five Solas of the Protestant Reformation of Scripture alone, Faith alone, Grace alone, Christ alone, and to the Glory of God alone. This is distinct mark not only of Protestant theology, but also of Reformed theology.

3). The citation in Scriptural references for each belief statement, when possible, has at least four different biblical references from both the Old and New Testament. We have done this intentionally to show both the robust nature of our theology and the continuity of God’s unchanging revelation (Malachi 3:6).

4). The usage of footnotes in the statement is to not only demonstrate the grounding of our faith, but also to serve you and your family in family worship, devotions, and for study.

 Soli Deo Gloria,

The Elders of Southwest Christian Church
Concerning the scriptures
  • We believe that Scripture, namely the sixty-six books of both the Old and New Testaments, are given by inspiration of the Holy Spirit [a]. These writings alone [b] constitute the complete and infallible word of God [c].

    b. Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:5-6; Revelation 22:18-19

    b. 2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:3-4; Jude 1:3

    b. Mark 7:5-13; Galatians 1:6-9

    a. Psalm 119:130; Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 3:15
    b. 1 Corinthians 2:11-16; 2 Corinthians 3:16-17; 1 John 2:27
