“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.”
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
At Southwest, because we believe that the gospel is central to God's eternal purpose to demonstrate his glory (Ephesians 3:7-11), we also orient our gathering, singing, preaching, and living on the gospel.
So what is the gospel? The word gospel literally means 'good news.' And the good news that God has announced to the world is that even though everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glory and deserves his eternal judgment and wrath, God is also rich in mercy and great in love towards sinners who have nothing in themselves to earn God's favor, love, or forgiveness.
God sent forth his only Son, Jesus Christ, to become a true man and to live a perfectly righteous life in full obedience to his God and Father as we are meant to live. And on the cross, Jesus died in the place of everyone who would trust him by absorbing the wrath of God for our sins against him and being buried in the grave. His resurrection from the grave on the third day over sin and death secures our eternal life and forgiveness of sins.
By faith alone in Jesus Christ's perfect life, substitutionary death, and resurrection from the dead, we turn from our sins and our self righteousness, and turn to God by putting our trust in Jesus' life and work. God is able to forgive the worst of sinners because of the surpassing worth of Jesus' perfect and full righteousness for all who believe and are cleansed and indwelled by the Holy Spirit.
The clearest Bible passages to read about who Jesus is, what he has done, and how you can be made right with your Creator can be found in John 3:16-21, 6:25-40; Romans 3:19-28; Galatians 4:4-6; Ephesians 2:1-10; Philippians 3:4-10.
